EducationWhether you have Primary or Higher Education Schools, University buildings or multi location Academy Trust premises you have a duty under Regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 to ensure that all those using your buildings, from pupils to staff and external contractors, are safe from the dangers of asbestos in your built environment.
A recent article has said that 80% of education buildings in the UK still have an asbestos presence with a potential for asbestos to be in the fabric of any building built before the year 2000.
The Health and Safety Executive stipulate that “Every employer must make sure that anyone who is liable to disturb asbestos during their normal work, or who supervises those employees, gets the correct level of information, instruction and training so that they can work safely and competently without risk to themselves or others.”

Through over 30 years of experience we have particular specialism in the management of asbestos in CLASP and SCOLA buildings.
These system built buildings from the 1950s to the 1980s have the potential to have asbestos insulating board, often referred to as asbestolux, hidden in the wall cavities and suspended ceilings. As these buildings age the materials can deteriorate leading to localised contamination.

Your maintenance workers, cleaners and building occupants (including school staff and pupils) have the potential to be exposed to loose asbestos fibre in the course of their normal activities if the areas are not managed correctly, this includes the periodic reinspection of all aras that have been previously encapsulated.
If you have such buildings your asbestos management plan must make particular reference to how you manage these areas
A local Authority commissioned a review of their asbestos procedures with regards to asbestos management in CLASP and SCOLA buildings following initial remediation works carried out following the findings of the HSE “Asbestos in Schools CLASP’ Working Group (ASWG)” We designed and implemented reinspection works in ceiling voids and cavities of CLASP and SCOLA schools ensuring all works were carried out safely and without disturbance of asbestos materials. All areas requiring attention were successfully remediated and asbestos registers and management plans updated.
